-A posy for a ring by Voltaire to the Marquise du Châtelet, his colleague in natural philosophy; she later made a still-current French translation of Newton’s Principia. Here is the original, since I cannot seem to find a copy on-line:
Berier grave ces traits destinés pour vos yeux;
Avec quelques plaisir daignez les reconnaître!
Les vôtres dans mon cœur furent graves bien mieux,
Mais ce fut par un plus grand maître.
If you don’t fancy my translation, is my (essentially true) Clerihew about her more to your liking?
Though the modest Marquise
Of Châtelet scribbled, je newtonise,
She was in fact the first to see

Your translation of Voltaire’s quatrain is a skillful one, striking a lovely balance between literal content and poetic expression, which is the proper work of the translator. You have not drifted far from the former constraint in satisfying the latter! The Clerihew is an entertaining form with an entirely different agenda, but once again this is a fine example. I’ve always felt that the Clerihew, properly constructed, is half outre, half informative. This was definitely worth reading.
