Teeny Shiny $7.98 Melt-Banana describe their third self-released album as “pop and nice,” a claim to which numerous incredulous subscribers to the band’s mailing list have replied, “No pop!” and “Extreme, please!” This angular Pythagorean-core HC quartet supposes that the words “pop” and “nice” have slightly different nuances those outside their native Japan are failing to see; perhaps they mean “pop” not in the Celine Dion sense, but in the Andy Warhol sense, “nice” not as in smashing a bunch of garbage together and expecting fans to swallow it out of habit, but as in well-crafted, hairball mania. Even as the band acknowledges that Teeny Shiny is punk, noisy, screeching, and fast, they steadfastly maintain that it is pop and nice for them. Though a mad scientist from 2788 has given vocalist / lyricist Yako a heart the size of a lion’s (engorged with futuristic steroids) and her voice goes spitting and whizzing above it all as 5,000 volts surge through her skinny torso; and given that the mad scientist has screwed with guitarist Agata’s brain so that his guitar-playing resembles a synth and two turntables; and taking into account the Melt-Banana rhythm section’s ability to keep up with a machine gun demonstration without breaking a sweat – conditions that all apply to Teeny Shiny, fictionalized or not – they’re not backing down from the assertion that their new album is pop and nice. Sometimes you just gotta trust people. |

Shiny Things $11.18 Offering a pleasant blend of alt-country and pop/rock, Jackpot produces a winner on 2002′s Shiny Things. Where many bands in their shoes tend to lean too far in one direction, Jackpot balances the two sounds with an uncanny ease. These simple rockers shuffle along with a light and easy bounce that comes off like a country-fried Matthew Sweet. The grizzled lyrics of thin-voiced singer Rusty Miller fit this music perfectly, offering a desperate outlook that stands against the up-tempo lift of the songs. “Psycho Ballerina” is a great example, displaying a gorgeously sad vocal line floating over the shimmering guitars and bouncy bass part. This contrast works well, and the band rarely takes a misstep along the way. The moody and elegant “When You Leave” is one of the few changes of pace, an acoustic ballad that offers up sparse finger-picked guitar and fitfully dark lyrics. “Throw Away Your Misery” is another change of direction, albeit into a funky synth-enhanced direction that lands between Gomez and Brad. This is a less welcome change, but only because the track is noticeably weaker than the rest of the disc. But for the most part, this is rock-solid pop/rock that showcases a confident band hitting their stride. Where alt-country seemed to get stagnant toward the turn of the century, its nice to hear bands like this helping it develop and blend with other genres. Jackpot’s previous output has been impressive, but Shiny Things is a really great album that deserves attention from fans of this genre. ~ Bradley Torreano, Rovi Performers: Dave Brockman – Piano; Lee Bob Watson – Vocals (Background), Guitar (Acoustic), Trumpet, Keyboards; Mike Curry – Drums; Rusty Miller – Guitar, Vocals, Piano; Sheldon Cooney – Bass |

50 Years in Music: Live at Montreux 1996 $14.98 The thing about Quincy Jones’ masterful approach to any musical genre he decides to dip into is that it is so professionally executed one can sit back in awe as well as be totally entertained and enthralled with the product. 50 Years in Music: Live at Montreux 1996 features a powerful orchestra that knows its place and allows guests like David Sanborn and Chaka Khan to be seen and heard in a new light. Sanborn is slow and steamy on “The Midnight Sun Will Never Set,” while Khan gets to convincingly sing “Miss Celie’s Blues” with a young Brody Buster on harmonica. “Q” conducts the Northern Illinois University Jazz Band under the direction of Ron Modell, and the slick 24-page booklet is essential reading to go along with this sublime listening and viewing experience. Dedicating a wonderful “Shiny Stockings” to Ella Fitzgerald, Patti Austin comes out with a silky-smooth voice, and the gigantic band suddenly draws back and sounds like it’s performing at an intimate little nightclub at 3 a.m. With prominent drums, light guitar and bass, and Jones bringing in other elements such as horns and piano, the ensemble is as perfect as can be imagined. Phil Collins is able to shed his superstardom and show what a really great voice he has, with an appealing low-key personality so different from how he is presented in the world of mainstream progressive rock. Austin and Khan duet on “Dirty Dozens” and their pairing is a total delight, as one would expect. This project is Grade A all the way around from performance to packaging, with a bonus track of a 12-minute “workshop” at Montreux, a classroom setting where Jones gives an intimate talk that holds up over repeated viewings, as does the majestic two-plus-hour concert, making this DVD package a real keeper. ~ Joe Viglione, Rovi |

Activity Center $15.98 Where on their last album, 2005? s Fosbury, Tahiti 80 slicked up and focused their sound considerably and made a beautifully shiny modern dance-pop album, on 2009? s Activity Center you can hear right away that the band has shifted directions. ? 24 x 7 Boy? comes charging out of the gate sporting garage rock chord changes, crunchy guitars, and an exciting energy that is both surprising and welcome. Indeed, much of the album has a loose and fun feel that? s inspired by mid-’60s rock and pop, dominated by short, snappy tunes, and brightened up by the frequent use of parping organs, sunshiney vocal harmonies, and tambourines. That? s not to say that the group has made a slavishly obvious ? Sixties? throwback album. There are still plenty of modern textures and sounds everywhere, and there? s a sparse cleanliness to the group? s playing and arrangements that would have them thrown out of any garage. It? s the combination of eras, styles, and sounds, as well as the evocative nature of the song structures, Xavier Boyer? s sweetly heartfelt vocals, and energetic restraint the band utilizes that make the album work. It also helps that Boyer and the group have written their strongest batch of songs yet. There is no filler to speak of, and just about every song would sound great coming out of a jukebox. Or car speakers? or anywhere. The track list plays out like a classic rock check list that touches on doo wop (the lilting “Fire Escape”), laid-back country rock ( “Dream On”), funky horn section rock (“Come Around”), soft rock (“Tune In”), and a lot of catchy, Strokes-y guitar rock. The end result is a complete departure from Fosbury, and the rest of their previous output, too, but it? s a move that will please fans of very poppy, hook-filled tunes played with style, economy, and plenty of energy., Rovi |

Air Stereo $14.98 The Damnwells have concocted a sound somewhere between alternative country and alternative rock on Air Stereo, an odd combination of rough and tumble electric guitars and smooth harmony. Perhaps the band’s oddest trademark is its Eagles-style harmony on “Golden Days,” an element that adds a bit of pop sheen to the Damnwells’ sound. The arrangements are fairly straightforward, with guitar, bass, and drums covering the basics while lap steel and piano add a little something extra. Alex Dezen handles the lead vocals, and like a number of his peers, embodies the right mixture of white boy angst and sincerity on songs like “Sell the Lie.” At times, this rustic, anguished approach seems to run against the grain of the happier songs on the album like “I’ve Got You” and “Accidental Man,” and is likewise at odds with the pretty harmony. But the Damnwells, like many other alternative bands, never seem to stay happy for very long. The elliptical “Shiny Bruise” follows a morose tempo that says more than the actual lyrics: this is music to get depressed by. Occasionally, the group’s guitar work — as on “I’ve Got You” — attempts to break out, drawing from classic rock and creating temporary moments of transcendence. But a great deal of Air Stereo, while accomplished, reminds one very much of albums by the Damnwells alternative peers. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Rovi |

American Tragedy $14.99 After their debut, Swan Song, went gold, the six masked members of Hollywood Undead went back to their home studios and started pre-production on a follow-up. With some new tracks in tow, Johnny 3 Tears, J-Dog, Charlie Scene, Da Kurlzz, Funny Man, and new recruit Daniel “Danny” Murillo (a former American Idol contestant who replaced Aron ? Deuce? Erlichman) reunited with former Hollywood Undead producer Don Gilmore and recruited four other producers (Griffin Boice, Sam Hollander, Dave Katz, and Kevin Rudolf) to broaden their sound. They succeed and they don? t, on this level. With more contributors, the group shows a wider range of influences, from mainstream pop, to Southern rap, to the usual riff-hearty rap-rock songs with big, shiny, Good Charlotte-style hooks, but at the core of the band, little has changed. The crew is still intentionally misogynistic and profane, sounding like caricatures of Eminem or Kid Rock as they rap and sing about gangsta clich? s like puffing blunts, drinking Patron, getting booty, and ? flossing.? Still, suburban youth won? t care if the material is stock. It? s a big, overstated album fit for moving car subwoofers, and even though it? s more layered with keyboards and digital gloss, the ? active rock? appeal is there, even when they depart from the machismo and deliver the introspective rap ballads ? Pour Me? and ? Coming Back Down.? ~ Jason Lymangrover, Rovi |

At the Speed of Twisted Thought… $11.99 Wow, think hardcore punk in 1980 as it was in the days of California or England, pre-Henry Rollins Black Flag or those yobs from Stoke-on-Trent in the U.K., or even Dischord in Washington, D.C. This was Lansing, MI, heart of the rust belt and as rusty and messed up as Detroit. The Fix, a paint-peeling aggro quartet, were tearing up basements, restaurants, and even frat parties with their brand of light-speed uncontrolled aggression and no-future (after all, they lived in the center of it) simplicity. They were howling to the all-but-deaf masses (remember that where the Fix came from, rock bands were doing Journey, Styx, and Bob Seger covers in bars to get the cash from drunken college kids). There were a few dozen in Lansing who got the message — Tesco Vee was one of them and had the cojones and craziness to put them out on his fledgling Touch & Go label, the logical outgrowth of his and Dave Stimson’s cool-ass D.I.Y. punk rag. And now, 26 years later when the pair — and the cats in this band — are middle-age codgers, Corey Rusk, who inherited the Touch & Go label and made it the standard for indie labels since that time, issues both singles (the Vengeance 7″ and Jan’s Room EP), a compilation cut, outtakes from the Jan’s Room sessions, and a live tape of unknown origin on one shiny little silver platter. Yeah! It’s for those who were there, those who wish they were, and those who only read about this mysterious punk rock band that helped to define the Midwest’s hardcore scene. This is proof that the legend more than lives up to its whispered-in-revered-tones hype. Guitarist Craig Calvert (who shattered all the original racial stereotypes of punk), “singer” Steve Miller, drummer Jeff Wellman, and bassist Mike Achtenberg were it. There are 24 unruly, unbridled, completely savage cuts on this slab, all of them worth your left arm if hardcore — the real thing — is it. There aren’t words to describe the sheer savage wail and whomp of this baby — just slap it … |
